My first date is supposed to be that moment of magic but This Is NOT Ess
If you thought witchcraft and sorcery, the darkest of black magic is a figment of the creative imagination of Hollywood and London suburbs then you are mistaken. Forget about witches of Eastend or Harry Potter, the witch from Chemwa village is real. It is early April and the scorching midday sun was busy tormenting residents of Nangwe village in Bungoma county. A small girl was writhing in pain, rolling on the grass as the helpless mother looked at her, pain etched all over her wrinkling face. She had made countless trips to Bungoma District Hospital now referral hospital for the last four years each time being laden with loads of antibiotics. "Ni typhoid mummy, mtoto atapona mpe matunda na maji" the young nurse had advised during the last visit. Mama charity as she was fondly called had given up hope of ever finding a cure for her ailing daughter.

"She will not survive this" Anelko the boda boda rider said in a hushed tone. The young girl "Charity" was a pale shadow of her former self. She had lost 18kgs since the ailments began. A class 8 pupil at Nangwe primary she was wishing for death to rescue her from this strange ailment. It all started when her grandmother from Chemwa came visiting 4years ago. Laden with bananas and sconces for her grandchild. It had taken off as a happy visit full of warmth. Her wars with the daughter inlaw briefly put aside as the family enjoyed the rare moment of tranquility, but her departure marked the exit of the bubbly child's health. Grand ma Tubilisia was known for her long walks across the villages and her association with witchcraft but all this was said in hushed tones for fear of being bewitched if overheard. Anelko picked up the frail child, carefully sitting her on the bicycle. The journey to Bungoma hospital began."Mama huyo mtoto una hakika atapona?" A stranger in a white dress robe asked them. "Lakini nimejaribu...." replied mama charity sobbing now more than ever." Huyu amerogwa mama" the stranger said. Her worst fears had been confirmed. Witchcraft was a strong tradition amongst her inlaws. Her mother twice accused by the neighbors was at the center of it all. From planting strange looking pots in her sons compound to tying strange objects at her door frame. Late night chants and superimposed convulsions on herself. She was dreaded. Her enemles would always be attacked by strange illnesses that never seemed to have a cure, but her grand daughter? Who would expect this!?! Then it hit her, since that friendly visit by Grandma Tubilisia things have gone haywire. "Lakini leo atapona" the strange man said bringing everybody back to reality. "Asante" replied mama charity. As the strange man went away the girl opened her eyes. Smiling weakly at the two. "Nataka soda" she said weakly. Her mother smiled through the tears as they rushed towards the distant shops. As soon as she started smiling, a phone rang somewhere. Mama charity checked inside her hand bag,"hallo mama charity....." "Hallo shemeji" she replied. "Grandma Tubilisia is dead. "What happened? " she asked in shock. "Ameumwa na nyoka alikua ameweka kwake"......
